About the area

Melle

A historic town with three exceptional Romanesque churches, a mysteriously inaccessible clock-tower and bustling market place. There are also cafes and restaurants – all of which we recommend. A lively street market takes place every Friday morning offering local delicacies (cheese and honey are our faves, but plenty of everything yummy you’d like to eat) as well as clothes, antiques and curios.

Not to Miss

The Silver Mines – Melle (Latin name Metulum which means mine) used to be the Royal Mint during the time of the Frankish Kings (8th to 10th centuries) – and the drifts and tunnels of the mines are preserved in their original state. An excellent and informative guided tour (in English & French) is offered – together with a fabulous gift shop which has a good deal of original jewellery at very affordable prices.
